Vineyard View

The warm buttery light of Autumn bathing the ancient building in the background while it ripened the grapes on the converging vineyard rows drew my attention to this scene. It is still amazing to me that grapevines will grow in such rocky soil, but they do – and they even have more unique flavors because they are “stressed” that way.  Additionally the rocks impart a distinctive “terrior” to the area’s vineyards, in part by keeping the vines warmer at night radiating heat they collected all day.

I made this photograph in the famous Chateauneuf du Pape wine Appellation located in South East France. The largest city nearby is Avignon where the Popes used to reside when they were not in Rome. The grapes were probably Syrah or Grenache if you are curious about such things.
