Provencal Vineyard

This France photo was made south of Roussillon in the Provence region. I saw this scene earlier in the day and made a mental note to come back around sunset. I was not disappointed as the buttery light raked the roof tops creating shadows as long as the entire tiled roofs. The richness of color and texture was very exciting to take in through my viewfinder.

The color of the buildings is quite unique to this area only. The local salmon colored sandstone is used to make plaster and mortar as well as building material. It must have a high mineral content to give it such color. The vineyard in the foreground probably has Syrah or Grenache grapes.
